Injection Moulding Design Guidelines
Expert Advice
Designing plastic parts for successful manufacturing.
At CJ Tool & Mouldings, we work closely with UK design engineers and product developers to optimise parts for plastic injection moulding, ensuring your component performs as intended, is cost-effective to produce, and meets the highest quality standards.
Designing for injection moulding requires careful consideration of geometry, material selection, and manufacturability. By applying best-practice guidelines early in the process, you can reduce lead times, avoid costly modifications, and achieve consistent, reliable parts.
Tips for Designing Injection Moulded Parts
- Wall Thickness: Maintain uniform wall sections wherever possible to prevent warping, sink marks, and uneven cooling. Thin walls or sudden thickness transitions can lead to defects.
- Draft Angles: Include appropriate draft angles (typically 1° to 3°) to allow easy part ejection from the mould without damage.
- Ribs & Supports: Use ribs to add structural strength without increasing overall wall thickness. Rib thickness should generally not exceed 60% of the adjoining wall.
- Corners & Radii: Avoid sharp internal corners, generous radii reduce stress concentrations and improve material flow.
- Undercuts & Complex Features: Minimise undercuts where possible to simplify tooling. If undercuts are essential, we offer advanced solutions including sliding, hydraulic, and manual cores.
- Warp Prevention: Design for uniform cooling and balanced geometry to reduce part distortion.
- Material Selection: Choose materials suited to your product’s performance requirements. Our team can advise on the best options based on strength, flexibility, and environmental factors.
